Banff National Park... some more mountains

 More mountain peaks from Banff...

Cascade Mountain, as seen from the town site, and some especially jagged ridges that form the north end of the Fairholme Range, as seen from the main parking area at the entrance to Lake Minnewanka.

Cascade Mountain, Banff National Park

The view from Sulphur Mountain, directly northwards across the Banff town site, provides a glimpse of just a few of the mountain ranges with peaks all just under 3000m. At the very left of this sketch are Mount Norquay and then Mount Brewster (further away in the distance), while Cascade Mountain takes up most of this panorama at the centre. At the bottom right is Tunnel Mountain (just a tiny hill in this context, located within the town), and the massive face of Mount Rundle would continue to the right of this scene. 

Mount Rundle, Banff National Park

Mount Rundle, as seen from the outskirts of the town of Banff on Tunnel Mountain Road, shows some clear geological structure, revealing even for non-experts like me a clearer sense of amazing power and mindboggling time inherent in the forces that have shaped these landscapes.  Sketches cannot possibly do justice to the sheer massiveness and overwhelming presence of these mountains.

Despite the magnitude and ruggedness, there is also something gracious and compassionate here... take for instance the ways in which what I assume is a harder layer in the rock that has created a gentle ledge consistently across the mountain, allowing trees to take root.

Moraine Lake, Banff National Park

 The road into Moraine Lake is closing for the season soon, and we decide to make the trip from the town of Banff for the afternoon. There's a gentle walk around the west edge of the lake that offers beautiful changing views towards some dramatic rock faces, and leading towards a beautifully framed view of some glacial peaks beyond. My daughter is inspired to sketch some of the peaks, as well as capture the sparkling emerald lake (which she decides to portray diligently).

Lafarge Yards

Some structures at the Lafarge concrete yards by Commonwealth Stadium... I've been wanting to sketch here for the past few years and have not had a good opportunity to do so until today.

new academic year at MacEwan University

After a lazy few months, the downtown MacEwan campus is swarming with young people again, adding some life to the city.

I've been using a larger sketchbook recently with a water soluble "sign pen" and water wash, which has had some interesting results. I love the character of the marks these pens create, especially when using larger pads, and can now finally appreciate why they were used during those "croquis" sessions in elementary school art classes in Japan. The Pentel pens are very sensitive to water washes, and I'm struggling with how to control the darkness and the resulting loss of linework.... more experimentation to continue...

road side fruit stand

A modified RV serves as a road side produce stand just outside of the parking lot at Victoria Park... perhaps this is the last weekend for little places like these to be seen here until next summer. Across the river and up on the hill beyond are some buildings at the University of Alberta.

Kaleido Family Arts Festival

 We've been making a point of going out to the Kaleido Festival that takes place every September on 118th Avenue. We managed to be there early on Saturday to enjoy some of the community driven celebratory atmosphere again. Helped by some great weather this year, the event seems to be gaining popularity each time.

Whyte Avenue

It's a cloudy and blustery day on this Labour Day weekend Sunday, giving us a sense of the cooler temperatures that are inevitably coming our way. As the kids sleep in the back, I park along the main commercial strip along Whyte Avenue, catching a glimpse of the crowds taking in the last weekend of the summer.

A family with six kids, related to my wife, spends some time at the in-laws...

garden tomatoes

A variety of juicy ripe tomatoes given to us by a family friend from his garden... they are much more fragrant than the store-bought kind, and somehow "feel" heavier; the little "flaws" each one exhibits make them much more interesting to draw.

Cromdale Hotel

The Cromdale Hotel is now a heap of rubble... it had remained desolately empty for years at a major intersection in this part of the city. Its demolition follows in the footsteps of a few other infamous old hotel/drinking holes with shady reputations that have disappeared fairly recently, like the Cecil (demolished in 2005) and the York (demolished earlier this year) Hotels.

I thought they were a different plant from peaches, but as it turns out, they are essentially the same thing...
